Dr. Howard has worked with multi-disciplinary teams of physicists, chemists, biologists, brain scientists, computer scientists, and engineers to reach a deeper understanding of the brain. Dr. Howard’s research efforts aim to improve the quality of life for so many that suffer from degenerating conditions currently considered incurable.

Dr. Howard’s most recent research initiatives focus on the development of functional brain and neuron interfacing abilities. To better understand the structure and character of this information transfer, he has concentrated on theoretical mathematical models to represent the exchange of information inside the human brain. He is also developing individualized strategies to incorporate solutions for psychiatric and brain prosthesis. As a research professor at MIT and Boston University, Howard has studied principles of behavioral and molecular mechanisms affected by brain diseases.

Areas of Focus

Synthetic Intelligence Lab

Development of a mechanistic method to reveal how the brain computes intelligence.

Exchange of Information

Advancement of the “Brain Code” that represents the exchange of information in the brain.

Memory

Advanced theories concerning memories and how they can be latent in the synaptic connections of a recurrent neural network.

The Mind Machine Project

MIT’s Mind Machine Project’s approach is different from the conventional Artificial Intelligence track in a number of significant ways. Instead of trying to construct Artificial Intelligence, it strives for Artificial Consciousness, by describing and characterizing self-awareness.

Trauma

In collaboration with the MIT’s Picower Institute for Learning and Memory, research has been studying the molecular mechanism that governs the formation of fears stemming from traumatic events such as in PTSD.

Intent

Development of functional brain and neuron interfacing abilities, using intent-based models to facilitate representation and exchange of information.
